Happy National Best Friends Day!

Well, today is a lovely day. It’s National Best Friends Day and the entire point is to celebrate the people that you love. And lately, things have been heavy. In fact, really heavy. So, today we’re taking the opportunity to shift far away from the hate, disease, and global strife that’s been riddling the news, and instead take a moment to shower our favorite people with endless affection. Like really. Go squeeze them. (Within reason.)

The History

Turns out, the good ‘ole USofA is responsible for this holiday. Way back in 1935, Congress decided to devote an annual day as a tribune to close friends. They chose June 8 specifically because, being summer across the nation, it made for a good day to meet your besties outside to celebrate. The holiday has since become so popular that countries across the globe have adopted it, and it’s also inspired other friendship-themed celebrations, including Women’s Friendship Day and Old Friends, New Friends Week (a whole week!). 

Why We’re Celebrating

Well, one, like we said, it’s simply a lovely day. But this year, more than most, it feels especially important to remind ourselves of the special people we choose to surround ourselves with and why. Because likely, they support us when things get hard. They push us when we feel stuck. They uplift us when we’re close to crashing. They brighten our worlds when they feel dark. They make us laugh, they make us cookies, they make us feel alive. Our best friends let us be our absolute selves—whether we’re raging with anger or vibrating with joy—and there’s nothing more beautiful than that acceptance. So, today, let’s get out there and remind our BFFs why they color our worlds with pure happiness. We bet they’d love to know.
